The making of Tazio!

Some of you may recognize this material as being that of Super Sculpey, a polymer clay. I chose this, as it makes for a quick and easy job of roughing out the basic core of the piece.

Once the initial core had been formed to something resembling the shape I needed it was time to begin adding the 'hard stuff'. Milliput is a two part epoxy putty that cures to a very hard material. It is best to build it up in small sections, with a careful additive process rather than slopping a great amount on in one go.

My preferred technique for adding the Milliput sections with this sort of piece, is to build up a little larger than I want ,and cut back using various hand tools. As things progress the process of adding and cutting back is repeated , often applying just small amounts of fresh material to make the tiniest adjustments to the lines of the model.

Many many hours later things were looking a lot sharper, having now cut out location holes and smoothed the surfaces .It is so easy at this stage to begin to think you are nearly there, but no,time starts to play tricks on you, as all those little subtle parts start to burn hours at an alarming rate!

Happy with the overall feel of the body shape I moved on to adding the key features that characterize the car. The panel lines , louvre's, mirrors and laying out interior parts. All the time this was going on, I was also regulary checking things by mocking up the finished piece using the wax sketch parts previously mentioned. This helped a great deal in keeping tabs on the overall look of the sculpture.
